Tree of Many
Once upon a time, there was a pride of lions, called the Tongers. At the center of this pride's land, there was a rather large baobab tree, where countless Pride Leader had sat under it's tangled limbs and wondered how to keep their pride alive.
The leader of the Tonger Pride was a aging lion called Morke, whose mane had long since turned black. He was old, almost eleven, but still strong and wise. He had had many cubs, many of which still lived under his rule, while many of his male cubs had ventured out, forming new prides and allies with the Tonger Pride. Yet, there were traitors among Morke's pride, that he had been watching for some time.
One day, when Morke had been sitting under the Tree of Many, as some of his cubs had started calling it, he called one of his last born cubs to him. The one who answered, was a young lioness. She was beautiful and was soon to be of breeding age and he had high hopes for her and her future cubs. She was Cinder, for her fur was dark in hue, almost a rusty golden color.
As Morke sat under the Tree of Many, he spoke with his youngest daughter of the traitors within the pride that meant to steal his title, the lionesses Morke had worked so hard to protect, and possibly his life. Cinder was outraged and offered to inform his mate, her mother, of the pilot and have the traitors dealt with, yet Morke refused her offer.
Let them come, Morke told Cinder, his tail tapping against the ground, as two young, strong males came toward him and Cinder.
These males were loners that Morke had let in the Tonger Pride not to long ago, and they were the traitors that he had spoken about with Cinder. Their names had never been given, thus the pride had taken to calling them Ghost and Demon, for one was very light, almost white, while the other was as dark as ash.
Cinder listened as her father spoke with the two males, not understanding why he refused to fight them, but instead tried to reason with them. All the while, she laid on her belly, tail rapping against the ground, taking her fury out on it. In her short two years, no one had ever tried to take Morke's position as King of the Tonger Pride, yet these two . . . cubs, when compared to him, thought they could. She hissed at this thought, earning a glance from the darker male, Demon.
So there is nothing I can do to defer your path of violence? Morke questioned, massive paws crossed before him. He was huge, strong, and wise, but so much slower than the two sleek males before him. He already knew if it came down to a life or death fight, he would not walk among his pride ever again. The two male's answer came differently as Morke expected. For Demon stood and placed a large, dark golden paw before Morke and Cinder. One paw for another,
the young lion said, his voice like rolling thunder, as he turned deep honey orbs on Cinder. And before she knew what was happening, Cinder was promised to Demon, with the intent to start a new pride and new allies for the Tonger Pride. The leader of the Tonger Pride was a aging lion called Morke, whose mane had long since turned black. Ghost was not so happy with the arrangement. His brother had left him out to dry, and his thirst for the Tonger Pride was not sated, so he challenged Morke. And with the entire Tonger Pride watching, Morke reclaimed his title of King of the Tonger Pride, with the newest ally, the Kruger Pride being created.
Cubs born from Cinder and Demon kept their parent's dark coloration, thus the Kruger Pride was given a bad reputation from the start as trouble makers and starters. And as time went on, a lionesses stepped forward, claiming a piece of land for herself, for she was Anda, a daughter from one of Morke's older litters. Anda went on to create the Kenger Pride, a pride for lionesses that resisted a male's rule. Her pride grew, mainly from her own cubs, but a few lionesses joined them.
Years passed, and the Tonger Pride started to decline as news of Morke's death reached all. The Kruger wept, as did the Kenger, for both were daughters of the great Morke.
Demon and Cinder passed, but their dark sons and daughters lived on, while Anda ventured out yearly to find strong lions that would produce strong lionesses. The Kruger became as their reputation stated, becoming violent and trouble, while the Kenger was a thriving Amazonian based pride.
Who will you join? Could you be the lion that could tame the wilds of the Kenger Pride, or the lionesses that could handle the Kruger's trouble?
